  2. Nisus® XS Alpha DEMO    —    July 31, 1992

  4. Important Considerations: 
  5.     This demo is only a preview of Nisus® XS. What you see in the demo reflects the capabilities of our pre-release, or alpha, version of the program. Since it is still in development certain features have not yet been fully implemented. Also, as with any alpha program, crashes may occur so we recommend you back-up your work before starting the demo.

  7.     Because this is a demo version, you will not be able to save documents or run the spelling checker. Also, when you print the word "Demo" will appear on each page of your document.

  9.     Japanese: This demo will allow you to use any of the Japanese in-line input systems as they function in the Japanese version of Nisus, marketed under the name of SoloWriter. (Mercury Software, in Kyoto Japan, has a demo of SoloWriter, which will allow you to test the fully developed Japanese input systems.)

  11.     Additionally, Nisus will support Apple's new WorldScript when it becomes available.

  13.     All Nisus XS files appear in the "Nisus XS" folder located in the "More Information" folder on the CD.

  15. New Features:
  16.     1) Sound: Sound may be recorded and attached to text. Upon playback, the text appears hilited as the associated sound is heard.

  18.     Playback Demo—
  19.     •    Open the folder titled "Sound" and double click the document "Sound Berry Pie.sea". 
  20.     •    Select the disk and file where you want the sample file to be saved*. 
  21.     •    Choose Save to uncompress. 
  22.     •    Open the document titled "Sound Berry Pie" from within Nisus® XS. 
  23. (*This file will require  approximately 2 megabytes of memory.)

You are now prepared to examine pre-recorded sounds, attached by voice activated (VOX) recording, to both individual words and entire sentences. To playback a single individual word simply double click the word. To playback multiple words double click and drag on the second click over as many words as you want played back. To playback sentences you must triple click and drag the selection over the sentences you wish to be played back.

Short Cuts: To playback all sounds in a text block, select the block then hold down the Command key while you click the selection. If the selection contains sounds then you will see the cursor turn into a set of "speaking" lips. Command-Period during playback or recording will immediately stop the current action.

  29. Recording Demo
  30.     •    Open a new document and enter some text. 
  31.     •    Click on the speaker icon in the vertical-scroll bar. 
  32. A new menu, the "Sound" menu, is added to the title bar. 
  33.     •    Select from the sound menu "Record Practice Sound." 
  34.     •    Select some text, and click on the record button. 
  35.     •    When you have finished recording click on the Stop button. 
  36.     •    Now, click on the Play button. You should hear the sound that was just recorded.

  38. 2) Publish Subscribe: Publish and subscribe on the text layer are allowed for PICTs and plain text. You may access these features from the Edit menu.

  40. 3) EGO (Edit Graphic Object): Nisus® XS supports the EGO protocol defined by Prescience Corporation for the new System 7 versions of Expressionist. EGO allows you to paste an EGO PICT into the text layer of Nisus®. When this PICT is double clicked the creator application opens up to edit the PICT. The creator application may be Expressionist or any other EGO capable application. Once you have finished editing the EGO PICT and you have closed the editing document, the changes will automatically be updated in the original text document.

  42. Button Edit Demo
  43. Important: due to an apparent bug in System 7.01, you must launch Button Edit first before double clicking on the EGO PICT in the Nisus document. 
  44.     •    Go into the folder titled "EGO Test". 
  45.     •    Open the Nisus® XS document titled "Test Document". 
  46.     •    Double click on the button in this document. 
  47. The application "Button Edit" will open up with the selected button ready to edit. When you have finished editing the button close the editing window. You will now see the edited button appear in the Nisus® XS document.

  49. Important: Button Edit is also a demo program and as such may crash your machine.

  51. 4) QuickTime: Nisus® XS currently has a simple player built in. You may open a Quicktime movie from within Nisus® and play it back in either of two ways. 
  52.     •    Double click on the quick time movie to start the movie.
  53. or... 
  54.     •    Click the film-strip button then click the Play button that appears. 
  55. A single click on the movie will stop a playback before it has completed. 
  56. The final, shipping version of Nisus® XS will allow you to incorporate QuickTime movies directly within a Nisus document.

  58. Playback Demo
  59.     •    Hold down the Shift and Option keys while pulling down the File menu of Nisus® XS.
  60.     •  Select "QuickTime Preview…". 
  61.     •    Open the folder titled "QuickTime".
  62.     •    Select the QuickTime movie titled "Full Motion Nisus".

  64. 5) Apple Events: Currently Nisus® XS supports the "Required" Apple Events.

  66. FINALLY: Remember, this is only a demo of alpha software.

  68. WHERE TO FIND YOUR LOCAL NISUS DEALER:
  69. In the folder titled "Nisus Product Information" there is a Hypercard stack titled "Nisus Product Information". Open this stack in Hypercard and click anywhere on the world map to view the phone number and address of your local Nisus distributor.
